Totally Absurd Inventions, America’s Goofiest Patents, one of
America’s favorite web sites, celebrates it’s Ten Year Anniversary!
The Totally Absurd Inventions web site went live in August 1997 and was
instantly a hit as USA Today’s site of the week and garnering 22,000
page views on it’s first day of operation. Since then it has enjoyed
28 million page views from all over the world. Author and inventor Ted
VanCleave has uncovered a treasure trove of goofy inventions over the
years, from the cow gas gauge to the diaper alarm.
Totally Absurd Inventions explores America’s creative spirit by
featuring real USA patented inventions that are funny, although
they weren’t meant to be funny when they were invented. Of the 150,000
patents issued each year, VanCleave explains that only about 150 of them
are wacky enough to be considered "totally absurd." He reviewed thousands
of pages of U.S. patents before stumbling across such gems as:
Kissing Shield - This heart shaped, latex covered germ shield is
suitable for germaphobes and baby kissing politicians.
Keg Head - Part hat, part beer keg, this beverage dispensing head
gear will make you the life of the party!
Kling Tut - Velcro gloves attach your hands to your Velcro vest
so your arms don’t dangle into your neighbors personal space while
sleeping in narrow airplane seats.
Cheese Filtered Cigarettes - This inventor says a hard cheese,
like a Romano, Parmesan or Swiss, can actually reduce harmful gasses
emitted by cigarettes. Yum!
To celebrate it’s tenth year on the internet, Totally Absurd Inventions
(www.totallyabsurd.com) has just been improved with RSS feeds so
you may easily subscribe to weekly updates and we’ve added a new
feature, Real Stuff. Real Stuff is a collection of funny products
that have made it to the market and are available to purchase. Real
Stuff, a feature within the Totally Absurd Inventions web site, is updated
weekly.
